Wolf_TorrentPosted 12/22/2010 8:13:41 PM | No, no, no. See what isn't understood is that there is no one Batman...
Yes, there is. There's the original that everyone grew familiar with, and then there are the spin-off's, the copies, the doppelgangers which are essentially different shades of the same character............but they are not the original. No one will care if Batman from universe A dies when the Batman from universe B is the only one that mattered from the beginning. PS: DC created its own multiverse of heroes/villains just so it could continue competing with Marvel and that's why we're seeing different versions of the same characters. None, none of the originals, unless it was part of their conception, were hideous, skinny, punk-ass posers like Donte.
The comics has numerous versions, the films have numerous versions, the cartoons have numerous versions. They are each Bruce Wayne Batman, but it's a different world/universe/story, whatever you wanna call it.
Uh huh.... Batman is Bruce Wayne, who, as a child, witnessed firsthand the murder of his parents. Forever scarred by his failure to protect them he channeled his survivors guilt into training his body and mind for one purpose: Fight the evil that took away his loved ones, and prevent it from ever happening to anyone else. That is Batman. Anyone (*cough*Joel Schumacher*cough*) that didn't portray Bruce Wayne as the tortured, brutal soul that he is didn't understand the essence of the character.
SSJ_Jin, "But, Wolf, Batman has been around forever and his personality has evolved and changed over time!"
Firstly, *pimp hand* Secondly, I don't care what Batman was like a decade ago, it's what he's like now that counts. Besides, Dante, and his tale, haven't existed nearly long enough to justify this massive change.
...It's Dante. Just a different world. But ya don't see people always crying over the Batman thing, eh?
It's a damn, dirty clone. |
BestDamnWriterPeriodPosted 1/2/2011 11:46:07 PM | I believe the TC had the right idea but went about it the wrong way. His comparison, in general, is flawed. The comparison should not have been made between the ‘Batman’ character and the ‘Dante’ character. It should have been made between how PEOPLE felt about the different variations of the characters, which is the actual basis of hate for the new ‘Dante’. Many people were not fans of 2004’s ‘The Batman’ cartoon series which aired on Kids WB; believing that 1992’s ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ was the pinnacle of the animated franchise and superior in every conceivable way (which I firmly believe as well; I mean, who can top Mark Hamil’s Joker?”. Even ‘Batman Beyond’ had its detractors, some saying that Terry McGuiness was a ‘horrible-looking’ Batman and that he was ‘no Bruce Wayne’. This is a typical response of people who don’t want change, but it is also to be expected when a familiar icon is altered as drastically as Devil May Cry’s ‘Dante’ or the ‘Batman’ franchises titular character.
The alteration to ‘Dante’ is comparable to how ‘Batman’ fans felt about various iterations of his character (from his ingenious reinterpretation in the Christopher Nolan films to the dreadful 60s inspired cheese that is ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold’). Like I said before, people don’t like watching something they have come to love and cherish change into something almost unrecognizable (which was nearly the case with the Terry McGuiness ‘Batman’ and was absolutely the case with the reimagined Rogue’s Gallery for ‘The Batman’ – although, on a personal note, I did happen to like the 2004’s version of the Joker; ‘Smear-free. It's perma-clown! Ooh, tough crowd.’ was and still is one of the best Joker quotes I’ve heard.). It was a hard sell for the fans of the ‘Batman’ franchise to watch Joel Schumacher turn the character into a neon-surrounded, running joke and it’s the same way with the fans of Devil May Cry in regards to the new ‘Dante’; many of whom claim that he has become nothing more than a cracked-out, emo, ‘Twilight’-wannabe shadow of his former cool self. My own personal opinion is that while I don’t like the new design or direction of ‘DmC: Devil May Cry’ (I was more of a fan of the over-the-top anime approach of DMC 1, DMC 3 and DMC 4), I do find myself intrigued by what I see and will wait for the game to come out before making my final assumptions. Originally, I was with everyone else on the new design – I hated it. But now, I’ve soften somewhat.
I hope I helped add to a sensible discussion on this topic board. If not, well, that’s all fine and good as it was a decent exercise in writing. Thank you for your time.
