Dante is a character that was consciously designed. Unlike humans who smoke, Dante did not choose to smoke. Dante's character designer chose for him to smoke. Why did the designer choose for Dante to smoke? What was the purpose? A random character trait? "Ah, let's just make him smoke. Because, why not?" No, this Dante was designed with the intent of being cool and hip with young adults. This was stated in interviews. It's fairly easy to extrapolate.
If you don't understand why smoking has a "cool" or "fashionable" stigma attached to it, you should look into basic sociology studies. Related: look into "smoking in the 40s and 50s".
