Best order to play?

So in order to get over the upcoming release of DmC, I really need to play some good DMC games. So I am going to go pick up the HD collection and I already have a copy of DMC 4 ready to go in my PC. What do you thing the best order to play them in is? By release date or by the games timeline?

Then DmC or 2 if you have to.

Have you played them before?
If not I'd go 1, 3, 4 so you can see how the combat evolved rather than having to go back and forth between systems.

I have played all the DMC games but I never finished 2. I am planning on doing straight playthroughs of them all so I wanted to know what people thought would be the best way to go about it.

best order is always release order as you can see the evolution of the series, so 1-2-3-4. you said you played them all already so it would not matter if you wanted to do Canon order 3-1-4-2 or release order 1-2-3-4.

I think when I bought the HD collection I did 2 first (just to get it out the way) Then 1, then 3.
But I don't think it will really make much of a difference they are all quite different experiences.

If I may make one suggestion, I'd recommend, when playing DMC1 to go all the way through to DMD if you haven't already.
I don't know if other people get the same sense of "adventure" from DMC1 (possibly from the survival elements) and playing all the way from Normal to DMD is certainly an experience.

Damn Nelo 3....
