I'm probably just in denial, though. But I still think if DmC sells poorly there's still a chance.

If this game fails hard enough, we'll never see another DMC game again. They're not gonna spend millions of dollars developing another game in the series if they don't make a profit.

The original games still exist. Especially considering the HD Collection having recently come out, I think the series is just on break, however long that may be.

That was just to raise excitement (read: grab a quick buck) in time for the new entry to the series. See: Hitman HD, MGS HD, Silent Hill HD.

As much as I want to see DMC5, I don't think it's going to happen at this point.
When DmC fails to meet sale expectations, the first thought won't be "Hey we should've listened to the 2 million+ fans we had. Let's give them what they want."
It'll be "Damn, the grittier more realistic version didn't sell? Well I guess that's that."
