DMC4 would have been the best but the backtracking is just lazy, best combat though. DMC3 is the best as an overall game.

No, I rated them as a complete experience. Going through DMC1 and DmC were the best. DMC4 was boring at times but Nero felt better and was more satisfying than DMC3 or 4 Dante. I honestly didn't like anything about DMC3. I hated Dante in it. He was too over-the-top for no reason. I thought he was annoying. And there were a lot of long cutscenes that were supposed to be cool but they added nothing to the story or experience and they often felt way too long. I didn't play DMC2 but I'll follow the herd and say it's the worst. It certainly looks like it's true though. But DMC1 and DmC are the only ones that made me want to keep playing. They gave me incentive to progress and that's good game design.

DMC 4 and DMC 3 (they're both equal to me in terms of gameplay)
DMC 1
DMC 2
---
Newer isn't always better.
And I shall keep Dante's Force Edge polished and sharp till he comes back.

by overall experience , difficulty, or gameplay? well i will just rate them all on each how is that. Please remember this is my own PERSONAL OPINION.

for me Overall experience would be
DMC1
DmC=DMC3
DMC4
DMC2

For Gameplay then it would be
DMC4
DMC3=DmC
DMC1
DMC2

for difficulty
DMC3
DMC4 (not counting Hell or Hell mode or this would be above 3)
DMC1
DmC
DMC2
