1 million sales sounds like a success to me.
Not when the original goal was 5 million.
Not when they later change that goal to 2 million.
Not when they later change that goal to 1.2 million.
Not when it hasn't even sold 1 million.
When was it 5 million? In 2009?

http://www.play.tm/news/31931/capcom-dmc4-s-2-7m-sales-not-enough-wants-5-from-reboot/ Ah, so 2010. They probably changed it when they saw fan reaction to the new look. --- Martyrdom is the only way in which a man can become famous without ability. |

- No Backtrack - Backtrack does not necessarily equal bad. There was plenty of backtracking in DMC1. And iirc, DMC3 didn't have any backtracking either, so your point is moot. - Developed Story - O.O This can't be serious. The story was generic and badly written. - Good Characterization - If you consider infantile garbage dialogue "good". - Better camera work - Sure - Better fluidity between moves - Umm...no. If you mean there's better fluidity for BUTTON MASHING, I can agree. That was part of them making the game casual. - Better level design - I will agree the environments and level designs were good. Better? Not really, just different. - Training Mode - Bloody Palace

AiddonPosted 2/4/2013 10:41:04 PM | Capcom's probably looking at this and thinking "Well, that was a mistake, wasn't it?" This is probably going to be relegated to those special franchise entries that nobody mentions, such as Bomberman Act Zero, Final Fight: Streetwise, Deus Ex: Invisible War, Ultima IX, and every 3D Castlevania |

If the game has a huge development and marketing budget, and comes from a well-known and established franchise, like DmC, it's not good at all. And because that idiot Tameem decided to use Unreal instead of Capcom's own miraculous MT Framework, they have to pay a whopping 25% of their earnings back to those guys. Only 1 million copies sold would mean that ultimately Capcom LOST money on this game. Don't get me wrong, games can easily turn a profit at far less than a million copies, it depends on the development budget and marketing budget. Niche games can sell 150k copies in America and still turn a profit through a modest development budget and modest marketing, word of mouth marketing helping immensely with sales. |

Damien94Posted 2/4/2013 10:59:05 PM | Just some numbers so those without any business sense can understand:
Let's assume DmC sells 1 million.
We'll be generous and say the average price is $60 (in reality it's less)
So that's $60 million
Now knock off the 20% profit margin that retailers make: -$48 million
Now knock off 25% for Unreal royalties -$36 million
Since we don't have any real development cost numbers, we'll use the average across the industry: $25 million
-$11 millon
And we have no idea what kind of money they spent on marketing, production, and logistics, but I can almost guarantee they're in the red, as that can easily exceed 11 million. --- Contrary to popular belief, opinions can be, and often are, wrong. |
