Not really related but have Capcom stopped doing disc-locked content yet?

They claim they've stopped. It remains to be seen...

My advice would be to either try the demo or rent it.

If you like it enough to buy it, then go for it. If you don't like it, then don't get it. Or at least that's how I see it.

Should I try Devil May Cry 4 first before DmC? I tried the demo and I don't think DmC is a prequel of some sort.

Try the demo....the old games and this game are two different series basically....so if you've never played them it's hard to compare

DmC is a reboot! It has nothing to do with the former titles, except that some of the former characters are in it, but totally different personas.

Like I said, play this first. YOu will then have an open mind and will enjoy this game much more. After it, play DMC 4 or the HD Collection from 1 to 3. You may, as most of us, enjoy the 4 original titles more (okay, I enjoyed this game even more then 2 and 4), but you wouldn't HATE this game as many here do!

In the end it depends on you, but remember this: If you want to play the original 4 games in Story order, you must go like this:
DMC 3
DMC 1
DMC 4
DMC 2

Don't buy this. If you've got 3 and 4 you're literally peaked for DMC. This game is a total downgrade in gameplay terms and has no replayability whatsoever. Even if you like doing the harder difficulties they're all equally pathetic. Save your cash and put it towards Metal Gear Rising, like everyone else who wanted DMC5 is doing.
