Should I try Devil May Cry 4 first before DmC? I tried the demo and I don't think DmC is a prequel of some sort.
DmC is a reboot! It has nothing to do with the former titles, except that some of the former characters are in it, but totally different personas.
Like I said, play this first. YOu will then have an open mind and will enjoy this game much more. After it, play DMC 4 or the HD Collection from 1 to 3. You may, as most of us, enjoy the 4 original titles more (okay, I enjoyed this game even more then 2 and 4), but you wouldn't HATE this game as many here do!
In the end it depends on you, but remember this: If you want to play the original 4 games in Story order, you must go like this:
DMC 3
DMC 1
DMC 4
DMC 2
