This was my 1st dmc game and it was a pretty decent experience , but not a master piece though , felt like it was lacking in some areas but I still want to play the older games.

1, 3 and 4.

And Bayonetta. And Metal Gear Rising.

I suggest playing 2 before 3. That way you will enjoy 3 even more.

You should play all the DMC games.

Like someone said, go and play MGR if you can, BUT don't expect a DMC game from MGR.

Also, play DMC 2 first and pretend that the game is just a side quest for Dante. Best part is Arius with his desire for the Ahhh, arcanas!

Play 1 first. It's kind of clunky today, but it's still a great game.
Then play 2 for a while just to appreciate 3 more.
3 is the best one, and it's also a good place to start if you just want to go straight to the cuhrayzee.
4 has the best combat system, but has some other problems. Still, it's a worthy follow-up to DMC3.

Other than 2 they're all good in their own ways. Just don't expect them to be ANYTHING like DmC.
