I didn't understand how people honestly thought DMC was better than later games

DMC1 still my favorite game to this day. Too good of an experience to pass up IMO.

DMC1 is a revelation for me in terms of video games. Definitely up there with RE4 as a game I'd take were I stranded on a remote island.
