I think the problem with expecting people to relate to a character like DmC Dante is that generally in real life people who are jerky douches tend to not see themselves that way or even want to be one.
This is why I think people seem to accept characters with less realistic more "larger than life" personalities like DMC Dante or say Bruce Wayne/Batman. Sure you're not that much like them but most would rather play a character with an unrealistic but relateable because he/she's cool personality over a realistic but uncool jerk who you can find on basically any street corner.
I still fail to see how Dante in DmC is SO unlikable or a douche. Not saying it's the best character ever, but he is not nearly as bad as people make it seem.
Also if you guys were kind of looking at Dante as a superhero and put him on a pedestal I guess that's the ****storm we can expect from Cena fans if he ever turn heel.
I hated his character, were he real I'd probably punch him in the face after like 99% of his lines, pretty much that simple for me.
Not really expecting a superhero, didn't even have a Dante example to compare him to when I played it since it had been years since I last played a DMC game (and that was DMC4 which was mostly Nero, which btw at the time I paid so little attention to the story/knew so little about DMC that I thought he was Dante's brother lol).
My Batman example was just an example of a character alot of people liked so it can't be switched out for just all superheroes since there's a TON of hated superheroes too.
Basically my point was that despite being unrelateable to most real people unrealistic "larger than life" characters tend to be more popular for some reason.
