I'm talking about the old style games that people say were the only scary ones. I can honestly say that while playing RE 0,1,2,3, and CV, I was literally scared only 3 times, and those were the famous jump scares (The jumping hunter in RE1, the kool-aid man appearance in RE2, and the Interrogation room Licker in RE2). I'm not bashing the games or anything, I find them all enjoyable, I'm just wondering what made them considered so scary. It can't be jump scares since there are none, it can't be anticipation of something scary happening since they were all slow paced / tank controls, and it can't be because of the vibe the environment gives off, because (aside from RE0 and REmake), the graphics honestly weren't sophisticated enough to give you a realistic feel (I understand that the graphics were decent for their time, but that doesn't change the fact that they're not good enough to immerse the player). Not that I'm a CoD casual player that hates the old games, I played all of them and found them fun, I just don't see how they're scarier than this. To be completely honest, I've been more scared playing Chris' campaign than any of the old style games (NOT that I was ever actually scared playing Chris' campaign, just that it was comparatively more scary than the others to me.) The only nod I'm willing to give in the scary factor is REmake, because they managed to have a scary looking environment, and the Crimson Heads were the perfect touch.
So let me get to the point of this topic after my wall of text. Can you guys tell me what made the old games so scary? Because I can't see it.
"Preference" implies that I don't like the games. I believe I've said multiple times that I did. I think what you mean is gaming 'perspectives', and I already know that it's obvious my perspective is different. I never said the games weren't scary, I said I didn't find them scary. Big difference. I was simply asking what elements exactly made the originals scary, I didn't say that it's crazy to have a different opinion from me.
I... know that, but I'm asking what makes it scary in your opinion. What aspects, what gameplay elements, what enemies? That sort of stuff. Unless it's one of those things where it's not really that easy to explain, and it's simply scary without just cause, in which case that can be an answer too.
For example, one of the aspects of Dead Space which I find terrifying, is the constant fear of a monster appearing right behind you while you're alone in a dark corridor. One of the things I found scary about REmake is the nervousness of opening a door to a room you've been in only to find a Crimson Head running after you.
I... know that, but I'm asking what makes it scary in your opinion.
None of the games were that scary aside from Remake and Code Veronica. For CV it was the eeriness of the Ashford mansion, their family, and their mentality. It was more of a peak into a psychotic maniac's mind in ways.
For Remake it was just downright scary. Zombies coming back as Crimson Heads, the lighting, the visuals, the music (special mention goes to the Neptune Tank), ect. ect.
Oh, and the eyeball swiveling in Birkin's arm always creeped me the **** out.
