Because TC was not even born yet in the PS1 era. Seriously I never heard or read anyone that says RE1, 2 and 3 are not scary during the old days.

LOL @ 3 being scary, you must jump everytime somebody opens a door.

REmake actually did a great job with creating an atmosphere. The PS1 era games really just combined cumbersome controls with a fixed camera to try and force a sense of dread by limiting your LOS. Really cheap way to go about it, SH1 did a better job IMO.

Actually I was, but it's true that I didn't play the games until I was older

I vaguely recall someone saying a while ago that part of the horror was the ammo conservation, but how is that scary? There's always at least enough ammo to not be defenseless, and if you can't spare any, it's not that hard to evade enemies. It seems more inconvenient than scary to me. Unless I heard wrong and nobody ever considered it as a horror aspect.

Traditional RE's ability to scare lies within how well the games can immerse the player. The soundtrack, the mood portrayed by the environments, etc. Those things should create tension and unease with the player.

For instance in RE2 when you make it to the basement, you're not sure what to expect. But the music is very ominous, you hear faint footsteps of something in the distance, and it's very dark and hard to see around the corners in fear of drawing attention to yourself.

If moments like that don't do it for you then RE might not be for you. Especially considering that the series has washed out more of its finer moments in lieu of attracting the CoD fanbase.

3 was scarier than the games before it and even some after it (CV, 0, 4, 5, 6). Especially the first time Nemesis chases you. 3 would make for one helluva remake akin to REmake and improving on the Nemesis AI and having him stalking you in a truly random fashion.
