Why do people refer to their characters as toons?

I saw it first in Everquest circa when that Iskar expansion was released. It's been around awhile.

Why did people start calling them toons in the first place anyway? There characters were part of cartoons or something? :P

There's more characters in characters than in toons or builds, I'm trying to start a movement... Babies! "Yo check out the stats on this baby" "all my babies use fap" "my baby died"
