Its better to be cautious than to be naively optimistic.

It's better to be calm and rational, you mean.
This board, however, has gone SO FAR BEYOND that. It's ridiculous.

Also, people like Oil are great with the satire, because I'm pretty sure people think he's completely serious.

I admire your resolve, but I've been burned too many times by developers wanting to "appeal to a wider audience".

I'll be watching this with caution.

Pretty much this.

Just have a look at Resident Evil.

This same doomsaying happened for Dark Souls, too. If you want some humor and perspective on this community's fears, check the archived topics early on in this board's lifespan. Before the game was released. I remember people freaking out at the concept of a new healing system that would be more accessible for newcomers, yet offering more challenge to veterans.

Though I think their fears ARE understandable, to an extent. The Souls series is near and dear to many, and it's pretty unique in a sea of a lot of games that are, let's say, bleh. And most people have probably had the misfortune of seeing at least one series fall from grace.

Still...

Look at these quotes from this board, before Dark Souls was out, to get an idea of how distorted people's ideas about what the game would be like were:

"The big point of note in this update is the "bonfire system." During your exploration, when you encounter a bonfire, you can use that as a starting point to explore further. If you die, you'll restart there.".....

I dont know if i like this or not... It kinda takes away some of the difficulty of the game if its going to have checkpoints now imo(DS2 sounds more forgiving than DS1 which i dont like personally).

"You can also recover your HP at the bonfires"
Again this kind of tones down the challenge of the game imo.

In an japanese interview from http://news.dengeki.com/elem/000/000/348/348352/, director Miyazaki mentioned that in Dark Souls a new "kakaribi system" (bonfire system) will take place of Demon's Souls Phantom/Blood Stain system.

On a side note, the new "interactive gameplay" mentioned in previous interviews will include Co-op/PvP events throughout the campaign based on how the player "role-plays" (i.e. if the player enters a thief guild in the story, another player may stumble across their territory by accident, creating a PvP event.) Both the player's stats and the armor he/she is wearing will affect how the weapon he/she uses performs, such as speed and hyperarmor.

Here's a topic of some people freaking out because of content being cut that was "too difficult": http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/606312-dark-souls/58067347

I'm just concerned about the talk of the game being more straightforward, I enjoy the aimless wandering and exploring, its the biggest thing missing in modern gaming, if they remove that it removes a VERY large portion of what I loved about Dark Souls.

"They better develop the chopped content and offer it as DLC later, if this game is to have any DLC at all. Amirite?"

More straight-forward could mean better explaining of game mechanics. By removing world tendency they already moved in the direction of less confusing game mechanics, but even still the various moves and nuances to weapons, damages, damage calculations, weapon scaling, etc. leave many confused. There's many people on this very board who don't seem to fully grasp weapon scaling very well and just assume "it has to have an S/A or it sucks as a scaling weapon"
