I understand losing souls but how do you lose humanity?

The numbers that appear by you health and stamina bar is the soft humanity you gain from killing mobs while the area boss is still alive, killing invaders/npc bp's (or killing the host if you're the invader), beating the area boss in online co-op, getting ratings in orange soap sign messages you put down, and of course using loose humanity you pick up as items. When you die apart from losing all your souls all the soft humanity you picked up in your meter go too. It's in your blood stain with your souls.
