Gamefaqs VS Reddit Tournament (Now Seeking Members for Team Gamefaqs)

#1zarroc407Posted 3/5/2013 5:49:07 PM
I along with my friend mojie55 over on Reddit am attempting to set up an 8 v 8 community vs community tournament between Gamefaqs and Reddit. As of right now the date for the tournament is set for saturday the 16th. Im looking for members to add to the team i myself will be participating and likely streaming any fights im in / host. So we need at least seven more players for the team and several alternates as well. So if your interested post below with your psn id.

A little information about the tournament. The level cap will be somewhere in the range of 125 to 130. We'll be using the same rules mojie and i have used in the past to see them go here: http://www.reddit.com/r/darksoulspvp/wiki/pvprules. And as i said it will be held on the 16th. We're still searching for a good spot to host the fights and working out the exact layout of the tournament and we'll make announcements as soon as we know more. In addition for right now the team spots are first come first serve but we might end up using some kind of randimization process for the other seven slots if we get enough people.

So please post below and lets make this thing happen!

I'm interested. PSN - IronShadowDragon.

The best, out of the way spot for a tournament like this is Sen's Fortress. Where the hidden giant is through the illusory wall.

as for the rules

1. No Backstab Fishing - Fine, but it should be allowed. Counter BS exists for this purpose
2. No Chain Backstabs - I disagree with this on the principle that they are avoidable; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fsp6k4830a0
3. No Chaining magic spells - I don't even know what this means, but it sounds like a lame gimp to magic builds.
4. No Healing consumables (Miracles are allowed) - Fine.
5. No TWoP - Fine.
6. No Pursuers - Get rid of this. Pursuers are fine.
7. Only weapon buffs and consumables are allowed pre-fight - Sounds fine.

Add this;
8. No Hornet Ring.

So how exactly is the "8 vs 8" part working?

Is it going to a simple thing such as a player from gamefaqs gets paired with a Reddit player then the team with the most wins are the victors?

Is it going to be some kind of 'crew battle' style? A crew battle is something I learnt from Smash. Basically, each member of the team is given 3 stocks/lives, but it works in a 1 v 1 fashion like so;

Gfaqs P1 vs reddit P1 - winner gfaqs P1 - 2 stocks left
Gfaqs P1 then enters the match against Reddit P2 with only 2 lives
Gfaqs P1 vs Reddit P2 - Winner Reddit P2 - 3 stocks left
Gfaqs P2 vs Reddit P2

And it goes on like so until an entire team is eliminated.

dozingdevil to address your opinion of the rules:

The rules reguarding fishing and chain stabbing are there because we arent looking for the best backstabbers or those who can put together a crit build and get a few lucky backstabs we're looking for the best players/team.

Mojie and i defined spell chaining as two different things: 1. A combinations of spells that that is very very difficult to avoid for the majority of players and can often result in a one shot kill. The prime example of this being the Pursuers and Dark Bead combo. 2. Spamming any spell such as WOG or Dark Bead. Again this rule is to avoid the use of common strategies used for fast unskilled kills. Again we arent looking for the fastest killer 're looking for the best players/team. If you really have a problem with this i can talk to mojie but dont hold your breath.

I believe the Pursuers rule was due to people casting it pre fight and it going off in the smaller arenas the other tournament used. Again i'll talk to mojie he may be willing to change this rule as i certainly have no problem with dropping it.

I agree with your additional rule oddly enough i dont know why it wasnt on there,

As for the set up we want to try to get this done all in one go and not drag it out over a series of days so i think we'll randomize the bouts and do greatest number of wins but nothing is nailed down yet.

If you have any other questions or concerns please dont hesitate to ask.

I think we should have a try out if there's more than 8 people. We don't have to tape it. Just assign two people together to duel at their own time and report best of 3 or 5. GameFAQ shoul take initiative to wean out starters to beat reddit. Chance always favors the prepared mind.

Backstabs aren't luck. There is skill in achieving them, and avoiding them. Outlined in the video I linked. The rules you're proposing certainly outline a specific kind of skill, but why shouldn't we include this kind of skill too? In reality, you're making the game easier for less experienced players who don't know how to avoid these things, by not letting GOOD players get rid of them quickly. These strategies stop becoming a problem when two good players who know how to avoid them do, and are forced to be more direct. Getting backstabs is a skill, and avoiding backstabs is a skill too.

"very very difficult to avoid for the majority of players" This kind of reasoning is poor. In it, you essentially are saying "Only a good player will avoid it" and isn't that the whole purpose of a tournament? Finding out who is best. So far there are two rules that are just making it EASIER on players who aren't good.

WoG and Dark Bead are both avoidable. If the enemy player is spamming them and getting away with it, the player they are vsing is unskilled as well. Once again, there is skill in being able to dodge these things, and implementing rules like that just makes the game again, for a third time, easier on players with less skill at dodging.

If people cast pursuers pre-fight, they should redo the fight (due to them being invisible if cast before an invader is summoned) or be DQ'd. Pursuers as a spell is fine, and makes sorcery viable, pursuers is only broken when invisible.

Trying to get the tournament done quickly in one day is fine, but just in case, what kind of tie-breaker rule should be implemented?

I agree and am all for this. Even if I don't end up on the team. The onyl problem is something like, what if the 2 best players have to play to compete? Then our second best player isn't even on the team.

If we get enough people and have enough time left over at that point i'll issue randomized parings and leave it up to the players to have their matches. This was a good idea and so long as i dont have to follow up on it or dog people to get their matches done i feel it will work well.
