Minecraft using WAY too much RAM.

I haven't played for a few months. I literally just updated the game from.. hell I dunno 1.6? But somehow one of the later updates has caused Minecraft to use way too much RAM. Right now it's sitting at 900 MB and it's steadily increasing.

Here's my specs:
Windows 7 home premium 64 bit
AMD Athlon II X2 215 Processor 2.70 GHz
4 gigs of RAM
Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT

I dunno why I would post my specs but maybe they'll help.

Welp, now it's using 1.5 gigs of RAM. That definitely can't be normal.

Minecraft has always used too much RAM. I believe it's also got something to do with Java. Either way, I blame Notch for his incompetence.

Runs fine for me. Sure it takes up a lot of RAM, but it's supposed to do that. It's the best he could do on Java. Get with the times and buy a more stable PC then.

I thought Minecraft capped memory use at one gig. >_>

That said, it is using 1.5 gigs out of your 4. Is that somehow terrible?

You can set Minecraft to use whatever you want. I have mine set at a max of 4GB out of 8GB.

run it from launcher.bat
make launcher.bat say this

java -Xmx512m -Xms256m -jar Minecraft.exe
if that's not enough memory, adjust the total heap size (Xmx) and initial heap size(Xms) to your system

On a similar note, I have a 6 year old Powerbook G4 Mac with only 512 RAM that has no business running this game. I can get it to work smoothly for about a few minutes til is starts to hit night, then I might as well give up because of how slowed down it gets. If I turn the settings all down AND upgrade to 1 Gig of RAM would it be at all feasible then to try and play? Or should I just give up?

And no, buying a new computer (of any kind) is not an option, I'm broke as all hell.

I have 16 gigs of ram and when playing Minecraft I dedicate 8 gigs to it alone... I used to play with only 4 gigs of ram and 2 dedicated. You'll be fine.
