There are two natural huge caves near my base loaded with coal and iron. I haven't found a single block of redstone naturally, even in their deepest areas, so either I'm unlucky or I have to dig down even further. How far, exactly? I have all this iron now, and besides its added durability I don't really need it when stone is all around me.

I usually only find it when I'm withing 10 blocks of bedrock. It's really deep.

I made it a mission to excavate some red stone and I found it within 5-10 of bedrock. The way I go about getting to the bottom is long and tedious but then I can easily branch off in other directions to find even more... hopefully.

layers 10-16 are the only layers above the lava level which hold redstone, but it also can be found within the lava layer if you're up for some risky mining.

Heh, I found some more pathways deeper into one of the caves just now and FINALLY found a few blocks of redstone. I also found a bunch of gold, which will look quite pretty in my base when it's finished. Now all I need to find is diamond....

Dude, I freaking love lava.

Tunneled deep underground through a mineshaft I made with ladders and torches lighting the way. Opened up to a cavern with lava, gold, diamonds, and red stone, and because I had such great amounts of rock, I was able to bridge my way over.

My last haul netted me 19 diamonds, 32 gold, 128 red stone, and a **** load of iron.
