How much light is required to prevent a monster from spawning?

Using torches, how much blocks should I go before placing another torch to ensure that no monsters spawn in this area.

Pretty sure that reverted after people complained about having to put down thousands of torches to make their branch mines safe.

From Minecraft Wiki: "Hostile mobs require a light level of 7 or less to spawn."

Torches emit a light level of fourteen.

I'm not sure what exactly does 80% brightness for torch mean but it states that it have starting light of 14 and go down one light per block. The monsters spawn at light level of 7 or less, which mean it would be a good idea to set each torch with at least 12 or 13 blocks?

That's what I do in my branch mine and it hasn't failed me yet.
