it i tried to join a server and said disconected from server no on the whitelist

It means you have to get permission from the host to get on.

You have to be on the whitelist to be able to go on the server.
The server admin will usually add you or whatever.

getting on the whitelist lets you in the game, that way no griefer can randomly join. to get on a whitelist usually you visit the server forums and introduce yourself so they know you.
