I once put a sheep in my house and set up blocks where it couldn't escape and was going to keep it but once i go far enough from my house, it was gone. Anyway to stop this?

No, it's just how the game works. After a certain distance every animal/creature is unloaded from the chunk.

there are some mods which allow you to prevent mobs from 'despawning' but this may cause major lag so it's your choice - do you value your sheep that much?

Well, I hear you can dye sheep now. And I'd definitely love to have a pink sheep. Maybe notch can add a special type of fence or something that any animal inside of it will not despawn.

Some guy on the official forum made a mod that lets you turn mobs into pets that won't disappear when the chunk is unloaded. Only problem is it hasn't been updated for Beta.

Notch wants to add animal breeding. Just give it time I guess.

What does animal breeding have to do with despawning? I can't make any logical correlation between the two.

Besides, this is Notch we're talking about. "Animal breeding" will probably only amount to "if two animals are in any given chunk, there's a random chance for a third to appear".

I think the best thing possible right now would be to make some specific spawning requirements for livestock, other than just "grass and sun", which is pretty much everywhere.

If you breed animals IRL, they're basically your pets. As in, they don't despawn. If only idiots had common sense.
