Limit for chickens?

I was wondering if there is a limit of how many chickens you can have on one patch of land.
The thing is I got this so called chicken farm and when I shoot eggs barely any hatch. I know it's 1 of 8 eggs is a chicken or something like that, but I only get MAYBE 1 out of 16 egg batch.

Here's a screenshot of what it looks like. Is it too many on one place?

Don't think there is a limit. It's actually 1 in 10 chance of getting a chicken from an egg. You are just unlucky.

Like it or leave it. Hey, where are you going?

There can only be 16 passive mobs in a chunk last I checked

Blood I don't believe that's correct anymore. I've seen chicken farms that were FULL of chickens.

A chunk is 16x16. 16 chickens in a 16x16 block would seem like a lot.

No, I mean WAY more than 16. Now I'm curious... I'll try to look it up.

I have no less than 30 chickens on a farm right now.....I just grab all eggs and toss em every time I pass by. They don't despawn either. They're all fenced in and they stay put (unless one gets out and then it's off with his head and it's nuggets for dinner)

EDIT: Also my chicken farm is 9x9, much less than 16x16.

They might have removed the passive cap, or raised it to the 200 some like hostile mobs then. That's actually a really cool feature. I want to start a Mooshroom farm, personally. That's a ton of mushroom soup for free.

yea the thing is now though that passive mobs don't respawn too often.

I didn't know this at first, my area is an island and I've killed most of the cows and pigs. Since then I rarely if ever see them now.

It'll be hard to start a mooshroom farm without any way to multiply them like you can with chickens
