Villagers breed like rabbits.

Using mcedit, I whipped up a plain, rudimentary town on a flat world with a bunch of small huts and some houses, along with some gravel roads. I also made some wheat farms just for the heck of it, and also something I thought of: Fields of doors.

The door fields need to be fenced off and have a good buffer of space between them because if you don't do this, the npcs will try to go to them at night and just stand next to the fences instead of going into an actual house.

I loaded my world in creative mode and peaceful mode, and placed a few villagers down with the villager spawner eggs.

Also made the ground out of wool instead of grass, didn't want animals spawning in my test.

Notice there is a weird border around my creation. It's almost like a npc village border that was being talked about back in beta 1.8. I'm pretty sure that border was not there till after I spawned some villagers too. The NPC's still wander outside of it, so I'm guessing it's just a lighting/shadow bug that somehow goes around my entire village.

So after about an hour of being away from my computer, and letting minecraft run, I check up and see there are indeed more villagers then I started with. I figured that the fields of doors would help speed up the process since they breed depending on how many doors are in the vicinity.

(Not sure what was going on with the wheat back there. Some grew and the rest didn't do to being out of range, even though the chunks were loaded the whole time.)

So then I step away from my game for 5 hours leaving minecraft running. I come back to this:

There's over 160 villagers now. I started with 6. They like the outskirts of town more then the center I've noticed. At night, they tend to cram about 20-30 of themselves into a single hut.

No real point to this test other then to see if you could have your own city and populate the hell out of it. Yep you can.

Very interesting. I would never be able to run Minecraft for 5 hours, it freezes after 5 minutes.

I really think villagers spawning is a silly thing. They can't really do anything other than walk around and be annoying, and now you can't even kill them without that thing killing you.

I like your experiment though. I don't think animals would have changed much to be be honest, I could be wrong but I guess if you just didn't want them to get in the way then that makes a little sense.

Good, now build a castle and assert yourself as a king or a villager as a puppet king.

This is minecraft. Why would you want to deal with uneven terrain? If you don't like the lay of the land, you punch it until it shapes the f*** up.

Make sure there's plenty of sacrificing to the great Enderman in the Sky. Preferably by lava.

Jon said he wants to give villagers a purpose eventually, to be able to talk to them/trade with them, etc. They just haven't started to work on that at all yet.

The reason I didn't want animals is so I could track the villagers/golems with the entity count in F3. Animals would get in the way. That's why I knew I had 160+ villagers without having to count them myself.

I was running the 1.2 pre-release so unless it gets changed in the official 1.2, this is what we got until the 12w10a snapshot next week. Edit: Oh didn't notice there they were up to 1.2.2. So maybe it is tweaked by now.

Huh, if that was in 1.2, that must have been the slower version of breeding, haha, unless Jon never implemented his changes.
