How far down underground are strongholds?

I just started digging straight down over a stronghold, eventually I heard a zombie knocking on a door, so I knew I had to be close, but I didn't know if I should keep mining down or outwards or what x_x I dug what I think was towards the sound for a couple minutes, then nothing, so I just kept going down... lava... yea x_x

So... is there any specific depth they can be found in or is it just anywhere from the surface to bedrock level? U_U

If you put all your stuff in a chest then you can dig down all day. :/

I've encountered strongholds relatively close to the surface (maybe y:40 or so) all the way down to bedrock. Even a couple exposed to air because a ravine cut through them.
