Noob: what do I need to get the best enchantment on a sword?

I'm new to the of version so forgive me for my stupidity. What do I need to get a diamond sword with sharpness V? I know how to build the library, but there's this level thing and other stuff that I don't understand. Also, should I only enchant brand new items or can they be repaired?

If you repair an enchanted item, it will lose the enchantment, so I'd recommend enchanting highly repaired items.

Enchanting is random, with a higher chance of good enchantments based on how high the level of the enchantment was. The amount of bookshelves used raises the level of the enchantment. In Update 1.3, the max level will be lowered to 30, allowing lower levels to give better enchantments. You'll also only need a ring of bookshelves one high, instead of two. I'd recommend waiting for tomorrow before you enchant diamond items with high-level enchantments.

Wait until tomorrow, ring of bookshelves (1 high), be level 30, use a new sword, and cross my fingers? If I don't have that right, let me know. Otherwise, thanks for the help!

I know they removed Efficiency V from 1.3, so it's possible they removed other level 5 enchants like Sharpness V.

Just make sure you make the bookshelves correctly, you should be set!

You'll need to leave an empty space between the enchanting table and the bookshelf. Overall, you'll place down 15 bookshelves. Here's a diagram:

But with 1.3, it's only 1 block high, not 2 like the picture.

I wonder if I'm the only one who will still make the bookshelves 2 high just so it doesn't look completely derpy.

I like this setup myself:

14/15 bookshelves showing, the last one is hidden in a corner.

I'm thinking 2 high in an L-shape. That's 18 bookshelves, or 16 if you skip the ones in the corner.

Edit: The internet has taught me that any time you think "I wonder if I'm the only one who..." the answer is no.
