If you log in and you just happen to be near someone, you leave a copy of yourself to be killed off.

I know this from friends testing it, as well as me losing a full set of iron armor in the evergreen dam when I logged in to see 3 bandits afk but they killed me when I logged out seeing them.

Other than that, log out in an area you know for sure is safe such as outside a town wall or in a forest and you will not leave behind a copy.
