At what distance (from the player) and which light levels do hostile mobs spawn?

I'm talking basic mobs (Creepers, Skeles, Endermen, Spiders) and spawn out of thin air. Not the cage thingies.

What about Pig Zombies? They appear to spawn like only 5 blocks away (read: behind)from me.

They can't spawn within 24 blocks of the player (in any direction), or above light level 7.
Zombie Pigmen will spawn in any 2-high space in the Nether, regardless of distance from the player.

No mob can spawn with in a 24 block sphere of you.

Normal hostile mobs will spawn in light level 7 or lower. The lower the light the greater the chance to spawn. so you will get more at light level 0-1 then you would 6-7.

As for Zombie Pigmen, I couldn't tell you other then light doesn't effect their spawning.

What about a maximum distance?
