how am I supposed to obtain mythic gear?

I am at the point where I no longer benefit from insane games. And every time I go into a nightmare game I get booted out. And I can just barely complete wave 1 one the first map by myself, but it gives no drops.

Some advice. The first map isn't the easiest and has terrible drops anyway. I would actually suggest the summit first wave especially if you have a squire/ countess. you can defend the back 2 crystals with 4 bouncers initially though Djinn may force you to go back and place some harpoons later in the wave.

The summit is almost guaranteed to give you something better than you have in wave 1 as well.

I have no doubt this will be the best game of this gen...

It's much much easier to buy mythic gear from player shops than it is to get it directly. I'd go that route.

There are plenty of player shops selling intro-level mythic gear for a few million mana so you can get a set together that way and then start building it up. I'd recommend getting a tower character setup first so that you can build defenses that'll las you a few waves into nightmare, to start getting better loot.

Ok. I was able to obtain some decent mythic gear. But still I don't stand a chance with my huntress. I guess I'll have to switch to a squire if I want to play in in NM mode. There's nothing I can do about those purple ogres.

If you can kill ONE purple ogre (even if it takes a while), you can still do wave 1 of Spires and have a chance at getting a decent amount of starting Mythics (it's still a chance, though, I've run through that wave and gotten nothing but Legendary crap).

The fact that we are now essentially required to buy Mythics from people who already have them is beyond messed-up.

Messed up? In a game that was designed with a (very thin) economy in mind? Doesn't seem unreasonable to spend a bit to pick up some pieces that you want, so you can get started on your own process.

It is messed up if the only way to aquire these items is by doing content that requires them. I don't have a single mythic item, but iirc they also drop in insane on wave 25+ in survival and possibly in the monster fest maps?
I might be wrong though.

The mythic pieces I finally acquired are okay, but they're not good enough for nightmare. Neither are the ones that I see for sale.
