Valve: Hey Dotabuff, before you release your new DBR feature, would you mind requiring users to manually set their Dotabuff profile page to visible before anyone can see their history on your site? That way the site can still function at 100% capacity with no privacy concerns
Dotabuff: no probs brah

What a better outcome that would have lead to.

The problem with that is that there's nothing stopping some other site from using the same setup without the same ethical considerations. The security gap had to be closed, but they certainly could have communicated it better.

Implement the privacy feature in game the moment it becomes a problem. Allow Dotabuff to exist until then.

It's pretty ridiculous that the dotabuff owner is lambasting valve for making the option private by default. That's just how privacy matters work.

As of an hour ago, Valve has completely taken away our current method of gathering data. This means we are no longer able to get new matches, download replays, qualify aggregates, or properly calculate any other stats (like hero winrates).

Now that I think about it, this isn't such a huge loss. I didn't care about DBR anyway, and Dotabuff's original functionality will probably be replicated by a new site fairly soon. I just think it's funny that they killed themselves literally less than a day after they launched their update with the chat logs and everything.

If it were possible, don't you think Dotabuff would do it?

Because Valve found out that their data gathering methods violated the TOS...

And that doesn't change that they were whining about the obvious privacy decision in the first place.
