-You can't lose gold that you've already spent - buying items while out of range of the shop adds them to your stash so you can pick them up next time you're at the fountain, or call the courier over with them. This doesn't work for the corner and secret shops, though.
-If you're playing as a carry, in most cases you'll want to get a Black King Bar (BKB) so that nobody can stun you and stop you from dealing a lot of damage. Most expensive item in the recipe is 1600.
-Clicking on your opponents while they're visible shows what items they have as well as general stats and buffs - use that to infer their build and warn teammates, for instance, "TA's getting a BKB".
-Treat the stairs like brush - be careful at the bottom, and try to surprise people at the top.
-Wards work just as well as they did in LoL - buy them.
-There are fewer creeps per wave, but they give more gold - on average, it comes out a bit faster if you last-hit the entire wave. Don't go for siege creeps early on - it's nice if you can get them, but it's also really, really hard.
-Most of the supports in the game are supports in Leona's vein rather than Soraka's - initiators. Set up kills in lane and start teamfights on the right foot, and you'll get the respect of your team even if you're not healing them directly.
-Most teams wind up only having one hard carry and several semi-carries or supports. You can run two, but it's difficult.
-The trees in the jungle can be destroyed by some items and abilities - use that to create escape routes or, if you know someone's about to pass by, surprise them.
-Tangos stop being useful around level 10. Exception is against Nature's Prophet - they work on the trees created by his Q.
-If you see any of the following heroes on the enemy team: Riki, Bounty Hunter, Nyx Assassin, Weaver, Broodmother, Mirana...consider investing in Dust of Appearance and using it if they go invisible or you think they're nearby. You'd be surprised how many teams don't buy dust and get wrecked by a stealth hero at low levels. Blue wards can work, but they only reveal invisible units in the area - visible ones passing by aren't shown.
-Keep practicing. It's a difficult game to get into, but if you practice a bit with bots and/or friends, you should be able to get into it, and enjoy it all the more for how much harder you have to work for a victory.
