Just to let you know, most people will probably interpret "chronological order" as the order in which the stories occurred within the game world. You're better off asking for the "release order" or something similar if you want to know, well, the order the games were released.

The Search is the means by which all is revealed. Here's the order and dates of Japanese release, provided by this very site. http://www.gamefaqs.com/search/index.html?platform=0&game=Layton&contrib=0&genre=0®ion=2&date=0&developer=&publisher=&dist=0&sort=4&link=0&res=1&title=0&adv=1 Professor Layton and the Curious Village 02/15/07 Level 5 Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box 11/29/07 Level 5 Professor Layton and the Unwound Future 11/27/08 Level 5 Layton Kyouju to Majin no Fue 11/26/09 Level 5 Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle 02/26/11 Nintendo Layton Kyouju vs Gyakuten Saiban TBA Capcom
Order of production: -Curious Village -Diabolical Box -Unwound Future -Specter's Flute* -Eternal Diva** -Mask of Miracle*** -vs. Ace Attorney***
Order of Game Story -Specter's Flute* -Eternal Diva** -Mask of Miracle*** -Curious Village -Diabolical Box -Unwound Future
-vs. Ace Attorney occurs at some point after Specter's Flute, due to him meeting Luke in that game, but before Curious Village, due to Luke's costume change.
*Only released in Japan. Title is not official, but it's the fanbase's consensus. Really 'Majin no fue', or 'Flute of the Devil.' **Actually a movie, but it's so well done I'm not afraid to count it as a game. ***For 3DS, not yet released anywhere.
