It would be nice if it served some useful purpose beside being merely cosmetic.

Then again horses themselves would have been cool if they didn't totally blow. Gotta level up athletics anyway, and once it's maxed you're going to be faster without the horse, gotta baby them (no huge jumps, enemies, etc.), can't fight from them, etc.
