With fast travel, the devs don't need to focus on things like quest progression, back tracking, travel distances, and such. Fast travel is a tool to make the dev's jobs easier.
conversely, fast travel influences the developer's decision to make less quest and exploration content, a la there being less to see in oblivion than in morrowind
double edged sword --- it has made me want to reply Kotor 2 (never completely finished it)- OniEclipse It's ok, neither did Obsidian.-lolfail
