After 'healing' Kodlak and parting him from the beast within, I went to his quarters in Jorrvaskr and found an 'unusual gem' - giving me a miscellaneous quest to take it to some specialist in Riften. So I do that, go to Maul (marked with the active quest marker) - he spouts a load of stuff but none of his dialogue options have anything to do with this gem - is this a glitch, or am I missing something stupidly obvious?

Thanks in advance.

You have to join the Thieve's Guild, then talk to Vex once you're a full member of the Guild.
She'll explain what the Unusual Gem is.

Once you start doing the thief's guild quests you will find out more about the unusual gem.

So how come the game points me to this guy in Riften, even with the active quest marker on - there's no reference at all to doing what you suggest?

It might be a glitch, after talking to him I was immediately pointed to the Thieves Guild.

Plus, I don't want to join the theives guild - so I'll never know about this bloody gem? I didn't steal it - it was free to take from Kodlaks quarters.

The gem, and 24 others like it, are part of the Thieve's Guild quest that will net you one of the few quest perks (Prowler's Profit). Well worth it imo!

If you don't want to join the Thieves Guild, I wouldn't worry about it. You'd have to track them all down for it to be worth it anyways. And finding extra gems while looting isn't really worth the time, IMHO.

Nice one guys - think I'll take it to Vex tomorrow - if only to clear it from my misc tab - Maul doesn't want to know, screw him!

It is if you're a magpie like me and want a tremendously huge treasure room overflowing with flawless gems!
