Haven't played in a while. Is unarmed still fairly nonviable?

I mean, it was always sort of viable. Sort of. But not to a great extent.

Has this been changed?

No it hasn't really changed but I bet if you find someone to edit your save and edit the BASE stat for unarmed in some way you could do an entire play through

Is there any armor that ups unarmed? If so, equip that, and just do the fortify restoration trick until it's a usable, but not godly stat.

Get 5/5 in the first Heavy Armor Perk, and then get the iron fist one(forgot the actual name). Get the Gloves of the Pugilist in the sewers of Riften. Unenchant them and use them in your Armor along with the enchament that increases your Heavy Armor. Smith the Gloves, you won't really need to do the restoration potion glitch. Just with a basic Smithing Potion, plus 100 Smithing you will be able to do it fine.

Early in the game its going to be a bit tough, but it will get better like with any build. And since the new 1.5 patch unarmed got a couple of new kill animations.

^it only adds the BASE armor rating of your gloves so smithing them does nothing.
