Why can't I buy an armored troll?

Whenever I try, Gunthar or whatever the hell he's called says I can't buy one because I already have a beast under my control..... wtf? I don't have any summoned creatures, just Serana or whatever she is named. So

Do you have a dog/Barberas? you can't have both a dog and a troll. i think your supposed to only be able to have 1 follower and 1 animal (horse, dog, troll). However, i think Beth might have changed the rules a bit so that you can have a horse in addition of 1 animal.

you can get two followers if you recruit one before starting dawngaurd and then never take Serena to castle volkiner. Also if you never pick up the rueful axe Barberus will follow you indefinitely.

No dogs, no summoned/followers besides Ser. Any ideas? Thanks for the reply btw

This issue tends to pop up with that mangy little jerk, the stray dog. He's a random encounter that can appear at any time, and will automatically join you, whether you want him or not. Biggest problem is, he likes to get lost, or die or drop off the face of the planet once he's seen you. making it impossible to recruit a "pet" slot follower. What you're going to want to do is find Meeko in Meeko's shack, a ways east of dragonsbridge. He will auto-follow you, and stop the glitch. then you can dismiss him like any other follower, and voila, you can now recruit one of the armored trolls or awesome armored huskies.

addendum since i can't edit yet, The Stray Dog can show up and be completely unnoticed. You may have had him for a few minutes without even realizing it, and it simply wandered off and fell off the planet before you noticed him. It's AI is incredibly buggy, so bad that i immediately dismiss and kill him every time i see him...
