I tried when I first got the game and I really liked the mage but it got ridiculous, the mages powers did NOT keep up with the difficulty curve, getting through certain bosses in dungeons was nearly impossible. Played again as a warrior and was able to get far more powerful, is there any way to make a mage more powerful?

Mages keep ahead of the difficulty curve the whole game.

Mages are more than just spamming fire spells.

Destruction cost reduction, fortify destruction potion(increases damage), perks

Or you could exploit if that's your thing.

Oh, and there is more to mages than destruction.

Is there a good combination to make a powerful mage that can wear heavy armor?

A fire mage can get incinerate to do 105 damage per shot in one hand, fire ball 75, fire bolt 52 and flames 27, thats without potions or dual casting. Not to mention enemies on fire get even more damage don to them.

High Elf is the best in terms of a true mage cause you get 5 levels free with Magicka. But honestly any race can be a OP Mage. In the long run High Elf has 50 more magicka and Highborn to regenerate magicka insanely during combat.
