I don't understand how people can side with the imperials

#1sPK2Posted 12/4/2012 12:21:03 PM
After the intro. I mean hell, you got picked up crossing the border? Not even busted for anything. If you play a nord this is just stupid cause you get caught going home? what happens if you got a letter from your family saying your brother had joined the army and you came back to join with him and help keep him safe?

And if you're a different race, what then? you're not alloud into skyrim if you're not nord? Thats something I would expect from the stormcloaks

And then when the dude at the start tells his captain YOU'RE NOT EVEN ON THE LIST she says screw it, kill him anyways? What the hell is that? I'm siding with them this time for the first time ever and I feel like an idiot doing so. I mean hell, when you join the imperials they even bring it up like they weren't just total jerks for no damn reason and it was in fact something I had coming to me

Granted, I know they intentionally write these intros so you have no idea what you were accused of or if you're even guilty, but I wasn't even on their list, which means i'm not a known criminal. They condemn me to die for nothing? And if you follow the stormcloak guy instead of the guy who was sending you to the block (why in hell would you follow him if you had a choice?) more imperials jump you

And then on the way to whiterun from riverwood (this might not be a static enocounter) you see imperials escorting a guy in rags and they abuse you just for WALKING PAST on the damn road

Don't get me wrong, stormcloaks suck too, but there's no huge gaping reason beat into you from the very start on why your character should personally hate them. You gotta kinda track them down and listen to some of the crap they say before you can start hating them personally

The Stormcloaks started the war, commited high treason/murder, are racist, and are entirely responsible for the situation you're put in at the start of the game.
They're responsible for the entire situation that happens at the start.

The Imperials are simply doing their duty and executing a war criminal, alongside his cohorts.
You're in the cart with them, even if you're not on the list, they have to assume you're involved somehow.

I blame the carriage driver for picking up a hitch hiker while escorting prisoners to the execution site, then not speaking up when they think you're a criminal too.

Either way, I've joined both sides, and I have to say, I hated working with the stormcloaks. I enjoyed the Imperial side.
There's no reason to hate one side for trying to kill you when almost everyone wants to kill you in this game.

You're picked up because you were in the company of a man who committed regicide, and is the leader of a group of subversives when he is ambushed and arrested. It doesn't matter that it was just a coincidence, if you were sitting next to someone who murdered your country's President / King / Queen on a bus today you'd be grabbed by the police just as surely as the Imperials grab you in Skyrim. It's guilt by association.

And if you're a different race, what then? you're not alloud into skyrim if you're not nord? Thats something I would expect from the stormcloaks

Your race has nothing to do with you getting picked up. The only reason is that you were with a murderer/subversive when he was ambushed and arrested.

And then when the dude at the start tells his captain YOU'RE NOT EVEN ON THE LIST she says screw it, kill him anyways? What the hell is that? The captain is massively overzealous, this is true. You can not judge the entire Empire based on the actions of one foolish zealot. She assumes guilt, something that happens in real life all the time, and can't see past her own assumptions. That doesn't make the Empire a bunch of murder happy crazies - it makes them an organisation that gave a little too much power to a nutbar.

And if you follow the stormcloak guy instead of the guy who was sending you to the block (why in hell would you follow him if you had a choice?) more imperials jump you

I almost always follow Hadvar (the Imperial). From an in character perspective, following Ralof (Stormcloak) just serves to cement the fact that you are with the Stormcloaks, and are thus as guilty of their crimes as they are (subversion, accessory to regicide after the fact, a prison break).

The reason more Imperials jump you is because you are assisting a group of (effectively) terrorists in a prison break. Of course they want you arrested, or worse (as far as they can possibly know, your group is also responsible for the dragon that's attacking them and killing innocent civilians - in many ways, they're not wrong...). By going with Ralof you look like an accessory to mass murder - no wonder they want you dead.

And then on the way to whiterun from riverwood (this might not be a static enocounter) you see imperials escorting a guy in rags and they abuse you just for WALKING PAST on the damn road

I had the opposite - my first playthrough I had a group of Stormcloaks who shouted abuse for walking past. As an added bonus, the Stormcloaks threw in some racial slurs - something the Empire, largely, doesn't do.

No they didn't. Ulfric challenged Torygg. Torygg accepted the battle, and lost.

Funny, I thought it was the Empire that surrendered to the Thalmor.
