The axe isn't a challenge to a duel. It's an ultimatum. Keep the axe and submit, or return it and face war.

Dude, read zerobobo's post again. He said it wasn't a challenge to duel. But it also wasn't a "submit or else" either. It was an offer to make peace or war.

I wasn't replying to zerobobo. Read again. He and I pretty much said the same thing.

Sorry man. I'm posting from my phone and the topic is going faster than I can keep up with. And to be honest, I actually didn't look at the poster's name.

Balgruff sends Ulfric an axe too. its message is "lets the two of us fight to decide things. So why didn't Ulfric take him up on the offer?

Um... no.

Balgruuf returns the axe that Ulfric sent him, which was Ulfric's way of offering to join his side. I call Balgruuf a sellout because he chose the illusion of safety offered by the empire instead of honoring his heritage and ancestry.

I think you should play the game again because what actually happened and what you remember are not the same things.

Actually if you side with the Empire he will give you an axe to take to Ulfric instead of the other way around.

Thanks for the clarification. I've only done the imperial side once, I'm not as familiar with it. But now that I'm thinking, didn't Balgruuf tell you to take the axe to Ulfric, but it was already presented to Balgruuf by Ulfric?

No its his axe. Its when Tulius has you trick Balgruuf into action. He gives you his axe to take to Ulfric and Ulfric tells you to take it back and "expect a lot of excitement" or something like that.

Um, because he's a competent ruler who's response to "A Dragon attacked Nearby" is "Get my troops out there to defend my people."

Also, he sends his best and most trusted soldier to take a team and investigate a Dragon sighting, isn't corrupt or a puppet, and out of all the Jarls is the one who actually seems to have his **** together.

Again, This.

Oh, and he's also LOOOOOOOOORD of the Rings. He's the Jarl of Whiterun. Holler if you need him.

Other than Skald, I'd say the other jarls are just as competent as Balgruuf. Balgruuf has just been put in different circumstances that allow him to seem more "put together." That being said, I still don't see what makes him so great (other than being a YouTube star).

This.

And LOL at you calling him an "imperial sellout" just because he's not on the same side as you. I'm pro-Imperial and still respect pro-Stormcloaks (somewhat), but come on. By your logic, I could call Stormcloak aligned Jarls "Stormcloak sellouts" and it would be a-okay.

Balgruuf is not better than anyone else. He sent some guards to go protect the notes under his reign, Ulfric would do the exact same because guess what? In the endit was a NORD settlement without any dark elves. Even balgruuf bans the khajit from entering so he is still racist! People just like to turn a blind eye to it .

The problem I have with Balgruuf isn't that he sides with the imperials but that he's indecisive and being wishy-washy. He doesn't side with the imperials because he agrees with them, he just doesn't like Ulfric and finds it the easiest way to not cost him anything.

From his opening conversations you can tell he views ulfrics rebellion as having some merit and it might owe the people his support but he has personal rivalry with him and imperial coin is more benefital. He doesn't like tullius and won't even let the legion in without setting up some rules, so its obvious he's doesn't trust them either.

The fact that ulfric even tried to make a pact with him shows that they were on decent enough terms although not buddies, and ulfric was willing to fight together for what he thought was the greater good.

He's just all around horrible and anyone that likes him is dead wrong. First off, he's a horrible dad, all his kids except maybe 1 are terribad. Avenicvi dimes him out about receiving a ton of gold for supporting the empire, then he tries to save face by saying it wasn't about the gold. Also when you beat him he totally ditches his kids.

Balgruuf the Lamer more like.
