The quest through Nchardak should have had the cubes completely unobtainable if you get them in the wrong order and should have had special apparel that lets you breathe and walk underwater. Also, when you get the last cube you fight Shadow Dragonborn. It successfully shield bashes your melee every time, blocks spells with Greater Ward every time, and can grab arrows in mid-flight. It won't attack first though. It always counterattacks.
