Manipulating items in the game world

Why did they remove the feature from Oblivion where you had a easier time manipulating items around when placing them in your house/base/whereever?

Because Bethesda decided to leave it until the 'last minute' along with porting it to PS3.

I can't quite tell if it is more annoying than in Morrowind... where 50% of the time dropping the item would place it exactly where your crosshairs were pointing, and the other 50% you just dropped it on the ground.
