Ulfric's outfit + Linwe's hood + Cicero's gloves + Nightingale boots = awesome.

DBros chest piece, TG master boots/gloves and any of several head pieces... depending on what you like.

For Dovasiliness, the iron helmet (of course).
For Batmanery, the nightingale hood.
Circlet, if you're a pretty boy
DBros hood, if you're a girl... and want to look like a ninja
Jester Hat, because it matches. = )

Seriously though, the dark gloves, and the red chest piece makes a nice combination. It also looks sorta cool with the Mythic Dawn hood/gloves.

This set-up looks really good on female characters:

Jagged Crown
Savior's Hide
Stormcloak Officer Bracers
Stormcloak Officer Boots

Archmage's Robes, Dragonscale Gauntlets, Dragonsacle Boots and choice of Dragon Priest mask. I used Morokei for super-duper fast magicka regen.

This is what I've been using on my heavy armored battlemage/enchanter character:

Blades Armor
Orcish Gauntlets
Zahkriisos [Dragonborn DLC]
Blades Boots [still trying to find a pair of boots that matches a bit better; recommendations are welcome]

Looks wise, or is this part of your 'doesn't affect mage armor set-up'?

Replacing the chestpiece of any set of armor with mage robes tends to look pretty cool. I'm a big fan of Master's Robes with Dawnguard gauntlets and boots.

I would wear robes more often if they didn't all come with a stupid useless enchantment already on them. Hello? Bethesda? We're mages. Maybe some of us might like to ENCHANT OUR OWN ROBES.

Whew. Sorry. Had to get that off my chest. Along with those stupid pre-enchanted robes.

Hey there, sweetroll; I just cast Oakflesh... if you know what I mean.

Oh, definitely. I'd much rather have my own enchantments. But I use Master Robes of Destruction, with its 22% Destruction spell cost reduction, and a circlet and ring with 28% apiece. So I still get my full reduction, plus an amount of magicka regen that's kinda hard to achieve on your own.

Look, for the last time: Kirby has explained it over and over!

The "Swordthane" look from Skyrimblog.

Iron Helm -> Steel Helm (No Horns) <-> Aetherial Crown (or any circlet)
Hide Armor -> Studded Armor -> Scale Armor
Iron Gauntlets -> Nordic Steel Gauntlets
Iron Boots -> Cuffed Steel Boots
