Any lore buffs around? Vampire question

Vingalmo said...
"While the blessed state of undeath can be "accidentally" conferred - consider the bruitish creatures you find wailing in dank hovels in the wild...Only those who can trace their ancestry through Harkon's mortal blood line can faithfully accept the power conferred by his Vampiric blood. And among those, it seems, only when the heavens show the correct aspects."

That bit of dialogue has baffled me for some time now. I can't seem to wrap my head around what he's trying to say. I mean, obviously nobody in the castle aside from Serana is descended from Harkon. Vingalmo, Feran and Garan are even elves.

Am I not reading this right? He specifically says mortal bloodline. I know Harkon was a king in life, perhaps he got a LOT of exotic tail or something?

It's quite possible that Harkon comes from a long and prosperous family, and that it doesn't necessarily mean from him alone.

It's also quite possible that he's just full of it, as you're obviously not of Harkon's bloodline.

Plus, the guy is ancient. His genes could've spread quite a ways. In Europe, just about anyone can trace their lineage to Charlemange, who was an emperor.

Hmm, good points. Gracias.

While we're on the subject of vampires, why did Harkon want to kill Serana again? We can use the bow just fine with no real negative consequences for her.

Harkon is, for lack of a better term, a classic mustache-twirling villain. When it gets right down to it, the dude did a lot of crap for the evulz.

Harkon's just full of himself. Volkihar Vampire Lords are created either from direct conference from Molag Bal, whether by him fulfilling his "King of Rape" moniker or otherwise, or by being bitten by a Volkihar Lord themselves, though, IIRC, the bloodline can get diluted through generations which gave birth to the more common form of vampire.

Is there an echo in here?

Killing her with the bow would taint it forever allowing Harkon to blot out the Sun forever.
