I just barely started and got Alvin.
How do you continuously do link artes when in overlimit?

Use the artes that can do linked artes when the chain icon is out... example: X at first and u pressed R2 to start... then maybe Down+X for the next skill.. rmb your partner mus be of the relevant linked artes users.. u can change your partner anytime..

yes.. unless you are not in time.. you could linked about 6-7 artes if you are fast enough.. depends on the artes also.. some artes are slow..

Tip : If you combo with knockback link-artes some will do 0 damage, go figure.

I think mine didn't hit sometime cuz the enemy is too far away.

You have to know the limitation to each Chain Arts and when to use them, if you don't then you'll just waste the OVL for nothing.
Some causes knockback, others, knockdown, etc.

For example, my usual pattern (if enemy has no weakness) is:
Genbuzan (knockup)
Aerial Fire (knockup)
Ensenjin (ground knockdown)
then finally Zeppuujin.(push-away)
