Where can I get good monsters?

#1MegidolaonPosted 1/26/2013 12:06:35 PM
I'm at the Yaschas Massif now (I suppose more or less done).
My current monsters are low lvl or weak and mostly both.

When/how can I get decent monsters worth keeping / lvling at least for some time in the near future?

And do all monsters start at lvl 1 with low stats?
Does it take many items to lvl them up until new monsters surpass the old ones?

Just so you know:
Every monster starts at level 1. There are monsters that reach their cap sooner (Early Bloomer), others later (Later Bloomer, duh). There are also midbloomers, those usually start
You'd be more interested in monsters that are late and mid bloomers, as they have a bigger crystarium. Though Late Bloomers might have more crystals to receive their fair share of power ups.

It really doesn't matter much, what kind of monster you take. There are some, that are considered better than the others. But you can make any monster good by infuse them to another. But for the main and regular postgame, you can take any monster you'd like.
Pulse Knights are very good Sentinels, I heard. You can find some at the second area you'll reach. Brescha Ruins 005 AF, if memory serves right.

But seriously, don't sweat it. The game's easy if Noel and Serah are properly leveled.

For the beginning of the game, you can grab some decent monsters that will pull you through until about the middle or late-middle of the game. They are easy enough to come by and, while most of them are "Early Peakers", can be pretty decent. Even if you don't Infuse them with anything.

It depends on your fighting style. I personally never saw the use of SYN or SAB monsters, although those are the only ways to get Bravery, Faith and En-/Bar-Spells onto you. I suggest a COM or SEN monster, because Noel and especially Sera are dynamite as RAVs themselves.

SEN Monsters

Pulsework Knight (Bresha Ruins AF 5/New Bodhum AF 3) - it peaks at level 20, but as a SEN monster, it can really save your ass at times. Especially when you reach the boss in Oerba AF 200. A pretty decent monster...

Goblin Chieftain (Archylte Steppe AF ???) - another very good SEN monster, you can use this to substitute your Pulsework Knight.

Pulsework Gladiator (Archylte Steppe AF ???) - same as above, can also be your substitute for the Pulsework Knight.

COM Monsters

Feral Behemoth (Yaschas Massif AF 10) - I find it strong enough to last me for a while. It may be difficult to fight this at first to get the Monster Crystal, but with a SEN monster out, you should be able to get it as soon as you enter that area.

Chichu (Archylte Steppe AF ???) - the best COM monster in the game, in my opinion. You aquire it when you have the Improved Moogle Throw and chuck the moogle at the patch of red flowers south of the Nomad Camp. It's a One-Time-Only monster. It takes a while for it to fully level up, but it's really worth it in the long run.

If you have DLC, COM Lightning and RAV Lightning are very good ones. Sazh is a very good SYN monster, but like I said, I never saw much point in those...
As for the rest of the arena battles... eh, dunno.

Thanks!
Was finally able to replace my s***ty Cait Sith with a Flanitor. Took me nearly an hour to recruit it but it was hella worth it.
180% HP at lvl 1 and quickly gets esuna and cheer.
I personally never saw the use of SYN or SAB monsters, although those are the only ways to get Bravery, Faith and En-/Bar-Spells onto you.
>_>
Well, no choice then. Seriously need SYN as the first battle against Caius showed.
Which is a decent syn that relatively quickly gets Faith and Bravery?
I'm at the Augusta Tower now.

Oh and I seriously need a new rav. Scandroid just reached its limit, enemies immune to thunder.
Is there a decent rav that quickly has access to 2+ elements?

I don't know many RAV monsters. But the best non-DLC RAV monster in XIII-2 is Cloudburst. That can be found on the mountain-y area in the Archylte Steppe AF ??? although I find it to be a pretty hard monster to encounter.

I personally also stopped seeing the usage in MED monsters. Flanitor is good, his Hyper Rescue is a pretty good Feral Link, but just like with SYN and SAB monsters, I find Sera and Noel to be pretty good themselves.

Speaking of SYN, have you upgraded Noel's SYN role at all?
He gets the group abilities faster.
But for Caius in Oerba AF 200, a SYN isn't really necessary. What you want is a SAB to put Poison and/or Wound on him. You don't want a SAB Monster at that point, you just want Sera to Poison/Wound him, because you'll need a SEN monster out to keep Caius occupied.

Shoulda known that earlier, lol.
Anyway, I raised Noel's AND Sera's sny roles.
But I just found out the reason why my protect and shell disappear after less than 30 seconds and are utterly useless is cause the multitarget buffs last less than single target from another topic.

I guess I'll skip the sab & syn roles and monsters from now one. Just a waste of CP and items.

O right, can I just infuse different elements onto a RAV from a different RAV monster?

Question about chichu. You say IMPROVED moogle throw. Does this mean the normal throw gets a sort of upgrade at some point? When exactly? I don't want to miss this monster. I am using Behemoth and I love it, but you seem to know this game well so I have to give chichu a try.

My strongest earlier game RAV is Garchimacera. He has over 200 magic around lvl 20 and I infused a few damage resistances to him. I just fought the boss in Oerba myself and it was an incredibly smooth fight.

At one point in the game, you'll unlock the location Serendipity AF ??? which is a casino. The house made out of cards holds the Mystique in it. If you talk to her and have certain conditions unlocked, you obtain "Fragment Skills".

Upon first talking to her, you unlock "Improved Moogle Throw" and something else, which I forgot by now... anyhow, if you activate Improved Moogle Throw, the moogle now has a chance to get random items or coins when you throw it at areas, whether there is or isn't something there.
It's necessary to get Chichu and the Silver Chocobo.

Speaking of Silver Chocobo, it's also a good SEN monster... but I prefer to use it as a racing chocobo.
