Alright, I'm confused...

Apparently I missed a third character somewhere...

I went to 200AF and can't beat the boss. Every time I look up strategies all the FAQs talk about their being a third person. But no idea when, where, who or how I missed this third person.

Anyone know where I went wrong?

3rd person = a monster with a predetermined role whom you assign to your team. When you see a crystal float into the air upon defeating an enemy, you can use it on your team. Defeating an enemy with a Feral Link and getting a high % increases the odds of monster crystal drops.

Oh....so...the whole monster thing isn't an optional thing....you pretty much have to do it to get through the game?

God dammit....

It's very possible to beat the game without using monsters. Monsters do make it a lot easier, though.

You can do a No Monster Run and, with a decent enough Crystarium Build, you can do it and even Five Star the Final boss. However, Monsters are a good help in battles.
Especially SEN Monsters, they can be life savers - especially in Oerba AF 200 Boss Fight.

Yeah, after playing around a bit I figured it out.

Still...I would have uh rather they had added another character rather than making it like Pokemon.

Any tips on what I should do to use monsters effectively?

Just think of "Shin Megami Tensei", which is, ironical, older than Pokémon.

If you want other human characters, you're bound to purchase DLC though.
The Snow, Sazh, Requiem, Nabaat and Lightning & Amodar DLC can unlock other human characters.
However, for Snow you need a endgame party, Nabaat a well developed party or a good strategy (she's tough) and Requiem is made of endgame spoilers.
However, Requiem can be done anytime. All you need to do is to earn five stars at both battles.
Sazh involves no fighting, just doing minigames. But Sazh is a Synergist and I don't like using Synergist Monsters. It's also an easier and fatser way to earn casino coins.
Lightning & Amodar can be done around chapter 3. But you need to use Wound (a Saboteur-Spell), as both characters have the bad habbit of healing themselves.

Oh, and since most of those characters need to be fought, you also need to cross your fingers and hope their crystals are dropped after defeat. Worst Case scenario is, you fight for hours with no success.

Or Knight of Ratatosk, which came out a few years earlier - okay, we do get temporary-eventually-turned-permanent human characters to join the party, but they have a Level Cap and never gain EXP so are basically rendered pointless.
