There really is no strategy to get better and more payouts in this game. The only real tip is to make sure you use manual play instead of auto play

To change the machine, just save at the woman you talk to, if she doesn't say "it's like a warm summers day or that machine is on fire" just quit to main menu, reload and talk again. Once you get the desired mood it's all pure luck.... As said above manual seems to be better than auto play. Other than that it's just pure chance >.>

The mood is random, and refreshes every time you return from the Crux. It doesn't really matter too terribly much though, it's a like 10% win difference average from the "worst" to "best" moods.
Mao: Tyrant Overlord Baal!? Wasn't he just a ploy to force players into playing their games for 100 hours longer!?

The only reason to play slots is if you're going after all the fragments in the game, which is one of the most tedious tasks in any game ever. You get 1 fragment for winning more than 7777 coins in slots. Otherwise, I would recommend just earning Gil later in the game and buying whatever you want from the casino with Gil.

If you're trying to earn coins you should be racing, not using the slots.

If you're trying to get the fragment from the slot machine you should be taping down L1 and walking away for about an hour.
