Some of this has been fielded but to any newcomer I just re-played the game to the ending. I did a bit of some pit stops (at Casinos) but my time complete was around 40 hours.

The following were invaluable to me as my 1st monsters before I built anything due to ease of leveling along with ability to acquire them. 3 of them being Top-Tier already

*I didn't bother with Albino Lobo due to difficulty of capturing on new playthrough...some can get him in 2 hours, some can get it on 1st encounter, I ignored it completely

The early RAV I captured early was Notsugo (never leveled...just used) and Behemoth (also never really leveled) until I reached their replacements.

Pulsework Knight (leveled then later dropped for Gob Chief)
Dragoon (Also leveled and then only dropped at beginning of Academia 500 for Cactuar)

Cactuar
Goblin Chieftain
Cloudburst (was invaluable once acquired)

*Flanitor was captured but never used, Gahongas was captured but also never used. Even though both are considered useful; I was able to capitalize on the feral links of Cloudburst, Gob Chief, and Cactuar to conquer ALL.

White Chocobo was my racer in the Casino, took some time to actually acquire him without Battlemania, Clock Master, etc....

All mobs were leveled if stated but "not even infused" and still allowed me to complete the game again.

When considering versatility, ease of leveling, ability to acquire I would definitely recommend Cactuar higher than any COM (even Chichu) in accomplishing just about any and all game tasks. Of course Cactuar isn't the "best" COM per se, but he shines pretty bright as he can be used for just about everything. Cloudburst is the same way. Goblin Chief is probably my nomination for the best SEN period until we learn more about DLC Snow. So until a player can efficiently acquire Gill or more monsters to level the pets I listed and used above were irreplaceable!

I think PM has a good chance of bumping up chocobos and the DLC humans up a good bit. For example, Amodar is a decent-good post game COM but at the moment the only thing he has over a cactar is resistence to fire... whoohoo, right? With PM, he could potentially synergyze with one of the best RAVs in the game (Light), and a potentially good SEN (Snow), giving him a decent statistical edge over Cactaur. Chocobos have always been statistically powerful, and this could very well take it over the top, though it won't help their prohibitive cost very much at all :(

The problem is Amodar will never match up to the Bravery Feeder + Protect Feeder + Deprotect Chaser combo in situations where it's applicable. Cactuar will always dominate matchups against Yomi and Typhon compared with anyone else.

^ That, and Cactuar doesn't have to go with a SEN, SAB, or crappy SYN in the third slot to be awesome; Cactuar goes where he effing-well pleases.

^correct me if I'm wrong, but you just listed half of all the roles in the game. If Amodar is in a slot and Lightning is in another slot, what would you suggest putting in that third slot if not a SEN, SAB, or a mildly gimped SYN.

1) You could have a MED, which helps for recruiting a la Cheer, and Cactuar is good at recruiting.
2) Sazh is more than "mildly" gimped. He's okay right up until you can make a decent Purple Chocobo, at which point it comes to light that he just doesn't have the magical capacity or versatility that you need for anything that you can call "optimal." Of course, he's still "good enough," but Serah and Noel without any monsters are "good enough." You could even say that Sazh is pretty good. No matter how you slice it, though, Sazh is just not capable of fitting into any "optimal" party.
3) You could go with a SEN that is not Snow. Due to lack of details about him at the moment, I don't want to discuss how plausible this may or may not be.
4) You could go with a SAB that is not Jihl, which is nice if you just want some help to get those damned ailments out, not do this stunlocking BS that doesn't work when you need it.

All of this is not about what you should put with Amodar and Lightning; that's my point. With Amodar and Lightning, in order to use Pack Mentality, you are obligated to use Snow, Jihl, or Sazh. With Cactuar, you can use whatever pack you want and still have a better COM than Amodar with Pack Mentality.
