I always say, Dark Fantasy has more bleak worlds, more "grit and grime" type of depictions. More harsher depictions of violence and torture.

So long as it isn't bland fantasy.

Edit: I feel the dire need to point out that Oblivion is currently in my Now Playing as I criticize 'bland'.

Nah, XIII obviously was a trippy game. FF won't change automatically into darker fantasy even with ghosts, skeletons, etc...
You need to create a harsh and hostile world. How would you do that when most of JRPGs feels like a tour into a pretty world with all mascot type animals.

No, I just don't want the Berserk crap, FF has never been the medium for rape or gore or various other elements of "dark" fantasy.

We get skeletons, demons and ghosts and that's as close as it will get.
