All vit better than all mana for RAVs?

#1EiEiPosted 5/23/2013 3:50:33 AM
Since the primary purpose of RAVs is building chains and not dealing damage, wouldn't it be better to just give them more survivability? I've seen all-vit builds for RAVs, but is it really better?

There's nothing wrong with dealing more damage with a RAV, and since they're usually survivable enough anyways using Mana items are preferred. Vitality items really only work well with the SEN role since they're never going to use counter-attacks when you want them to anyways.

Read through the build threads. This Noah guy noted that magic somewhat adds a small percentage to chaining.

True?

I'm not sure, but it might be so little that it's very easy to miss. I never paid too much attention to it.

As for going all-VIT instead of all-Mana on Ravager monsters, it depends. All-VIT will give you higher survivability for them, but it cuts down on your damage - and in this game, offensive is better than defensive fighting. I tries to use all-Mana on Cloudburst, but towards the last levels I really didn't feel up to collecting them so I went for VIT and the damage is still decent enough. The HP I don't take much note of, mostly because with offensive fighting (and proper strategy), most battles won't last long enough to worry about HP of the party.

The Monster FAQ is awesome but it's not so noob-friendly.

Question:

This is a sample entry from the guide

"Monster------: Chocobo
Monster Role-: Commando
Constellation: Chocobo

Monster Materials to Use: Power for levels 2-10, 30, and 41-99. Potent for
levels 11-29 and 31-40."

I'm not fond of balanced or jack-of-all-trades RPG characters. It's either a pure attacker, pure mage, or full-on tank. My question is, why Potent? And why at those certain levels? I Why not go all-power with the Choco? Doesn't Potent waste points on Magic?

At those levels, Power materials won't give any more Strength than Potent. Therefore, you might as well get the extra HP (and Magic) from Potent.

No.

Make sure you understand what those levels actually mean. It isn't intuitive. Read the beginning of the monster builds section for details.

Cloudburst can end up with a lot of HP if built for it. I'm not sold on the idea since it just isn't necessary in general, but I suspect it has some merit. Definitely go with Mana for playing through the game if you want to optimize.

So there's no hidden factor(s) that affects chaining? If the extra VIT isn't really necessary, I'd go for a more mana-based build then.

Quite frankly, you don't really need anything other than a commando and a sentinel, making a rav was just a big waste of time for me.

Once I had my killer chichu and the chain boosting weapons for both Noel and Serah, nothing in the game stood a chance.
